A Crossing and a Dream is a two person photography exhibition featuring the work of Josie Farquharson and Anna Chase.
Anna Chase
Anna Chase is a Sydney based Artist, Actress and Singer. She
specialises in performance based video works and digital photography.
Chase has a strong theatrical aesthetic to her work, transforming
herself into peculiar, distinctive and at times grotesque creatures and
characters by combining prosthetics, makeup, physicality & costume.
Chase studied Electronic Arts at University
of Western Sydney and completed her Honours in Fine Arts at Sydney
College of the Arts. Her video works have been exhibited at First Draft,
Kudos Gallery, At the Vanishing Point Gallery, Gaffa and Carriage
Works.
'Dreamt in Light'
'Dreamt in Light' is a
series of photographs capturing a character imprisoned in a stranger’s
dream. Created in a surreal fantastical fashion, Chase plays a
vulnerable, haunted and otherworldly being. We are faced with a creature
poised on the threshold between human and other-than-human: a curious
unknowable quality is personified in this creature. In this series,
Chase wishes viewers to engage with how human-ness and other-ness are
intimately bound up in one another. Chase’s work is suggestive of
potential and fantastical modes of being and she creates unique
characters which are dreamt up to bewilder and captivate viewers.
Josie Farquharson
Josie Farquharson is a Sydney based visual artist and a freelance
photographer. Her work specializes in natural portraits that are
influenced by and within each moment. The majority of her work has a
strong documentary style background that show photographs based on real
life stories. Leaving Germany in 2011 - the country in which she was
born and raised - had an enormous impact on Josie's photography.
Influenced by her travels abroad Josie soon adopted a new continent and
culture where her photography began to focus on individual characters
who had a unique way of life or a situation that defined them by where
they lived or by where they were born and raised.
'Crossing Boundaries'
'Crossing Boundaries' is a series of photographs that began when
Farquharson first moved to St. George. During that three month stay she
reached out and connected with local characters and discovered a stark
contrast to the comfort zone of her own lifestyle and life experience.
Fascinated by the unique characters and their stories Josie continued to
capture such real life portraits upon her return to Sydney. Comparing
different faces, places and situations Farquharson's work shows just how
multifaceted Australian life can be and what impact it can have on
making every individual so unique.
